They are a lot like people. They even have "meetings". They'll gather together and touch each other with their antennae. It's how they communicate. I got a picture of my ants holding a meeting today:

Sorry that it isn't very easy to see through the ant farm wall on the camera.
Here's how far they've gotten on constructing their tunnels so far:

A few tiny bread crumbs is enough for these ants every three of four days. And a couple of drops of water is enough for them too. Anymore than that will cause too much moisture in there and they will die. (I can say that from past experience.)
These ants are harvester ants. We ordered them through and they were shipped to us in the mail. When you receive them, they are in a little container and you put them in your freezer for 15 to 20 minutes. (That makes them too cold to move when you transport them into the ant farm.) Then you put them in the ant farm and they get to work making tunnels once after the first day. It's neat to watch their progress. They can't ship the queen ant, so the ants that you receive die after a few months (except for the queen ant, ants don't live long) and you have to order more if you want more.
P.S. And my praying mantis died. Probably because Cookie got up to look through the window where the mantis's container (with food in it) was sitting. Cookie's paws knocked it over. Sad
