PostSubject: New Trick :]   Sun Mar 23, 2008 4:16 pm

Got this idea from a friend of mine.

Here's Travs new trick. 'Around'

He normally goes a lot faster and sits right at my side, but he was hot and just wanted to play. He was very bothered that I made him stop his play to do tricks for me.

Next we'll be working on 'bow'

Also, feel free to throw some trick ideas out there! I'm always looking for new things to teach him.

How long does it usually take you to train your dogs?

Travis will sometimes pick up on tricks as fast as 5 min. [Thats just to where he understands what I'm asking] I usually work with him for atleast 30 min to make sure he gets it. I make him do the trick several times as well as do a run down of tricks he already knows and I always include something fun so he doesn't get bored with training.

I think a lot of how quick dogs pick up on things is how they are taught it.

I found a method that Travis really responds to [Clicker] and it makes training very smoothe.

I have found it to be a very effective tool. And it fits right into how I raise him. I use NILIF along with Positive reinforcement. I try to use absolutely NO negativity.

If you do decide to use a Clicker and need any help getting started/loading the clicker, you know where to find me ;]

I also use clicker... Maybie i'm doing it wrong.

I click as soon as they've done the trick, and after that I say the command then once they done it I click and reward... Any, um, advice?

Oh, ever since I've been using the clicker, Cookie learns so much faster! She loves that thing! If I get it out, she comes over and waits for me to click it because she knows click=treat. Of course, I never click it unless I make her do a trick first and only if it's one I'm trying to teach her.

Always reward with a treat whenever you click the clicker. That way, they associate the clicker with food.
When you first start using the clicker, before you use it to teach them any tricks, click it several times, giving them a treat each time you click it. Then once they know click-treat, you can start training them with it.

I usually apply the command before I click the clicker.

I use the treat to lure him [which also helps apply hand signals] while giving the command. He does what I want, I click the clicker and give him the treat.

Travs ears perk up when I get the clicker out. I can hold up the clicker in one hand and a treat in the other and his eyes will be on the clicker the whole time. He knows that he won't get a treat until he hears that 'click'

Ok, awesome... Although that sounds pretty much exactly what i'm doing xD

My dogs know the clicker is joy. We don't allways use treats, sometimes a quick 10 secound play or allot of petting.
